The return of Lionel Messi to the Argentine national team was not enough to inspire the national team to regain its glory.

The Barcelona magician was back on the national team for the first time since France beat Argentina 4-3 in 2018 world cup held in Russia. He, however, could not stop Venezuela from running out on his team.

John Murillo, Salomon Rondon, and Josef Martinez were on the score sheet while Lautaro Martinez scored the consolation for Argentina. The match was played at the Wanda Metropolitan Stadium in Spain.

Lionel Scaloni, the Argentine coach said Messi played a good game, and most of the chances created throughout the game were all because of the Barcelona star.

As usual, Messi showcased his sublime skills and came close to scoring when his long-range shot on target was tipped over the crossbar by Wuiler Farinez Aray the Venezuelan goalkeeper.

With a pass to Giovani Lo Celso, Messi played a part in the build-up to Martinez’s goal in the 58 minutes of the game.

Rondon opened the scoring for Venezuela in the 5th minute when he ran on to a fantastic pass in the penalty shot before firing in a fiery shot past Franco Armani, the Argentinian goalkeeper. Murillo scored the second goal before Martinez wrapped up the victory with a 75th-minute penalty.

The national team coach, Rafael Dudamel offered his resignation instead of celebrating after the match. Dudamel said in a press conference that he was not pleased with the use of politics after an official from the government visited the team before the game. He said talks with the federation would decide his future.

Venezuela will be back on the pitch on Monday to play the first Catalunya team which will be made up of former Spain internationals such as Xavi Hernandez and Gerard Pique.
